THE CHALLENGE: An accomplished poet and home baker wanted to create a book that combined both of her passions. She was looking for a “cookbook meets poetry collection meets coffee table book that invites readers to share an alchemical sensory adventure.” The book should be an attractive, appropriate visual that captures the essence of the book “experience” to sell to publishers. Should be photography forward and also explore including “human elements” (watercolor,  illustration, food splotches, or similar) into layout. Clean and minimal feeling with  clear yet also interrelated of poetry, recipe, and commentary typographic elements.
THE SOLUTION: Lots of textures (slips of paper, food spills, polaroids) combined with mixed typography (handwriting, slab serif, sans serif) and large, full-bleed photos were folded together to create the final version. It felt both raw and polished — the exact balance the author was looking for!
